The Civics Center congratulates Laura Brill on receiving the Judith Soley Lawyer as Citizen Award

The Civics Center Director Laura W. Brill was honored with the 2020 Judith Soley Lawyer as Citizen Award from the California Women Lawyers (CWL). The Judith Soley Lawyer as Citizen Award is given to one attorney each year who has “made a significant contribution to their community...beyond the practice of law” and “devotes time and effort to the public good and values through the tradition of public service and involvement.”

“In taking on the role of leading the next generation to fuller participation in our democracy, a lawyer would have to combine keen legal insight with the capacity to inspire, organize and lead, and perhaps most of all a belief in our institutions and a belief that in educating, you empower the next generation to make a difference,” said Paul M. Smith, vice president of Litigation and Strategy at the Campaign Legal Center. "Laura possesses all these qualities, and California Law Women has chosen well to honor her this year with the Judith Soley Lawyer as Citizen Award."

As founder of The Civics Center, Brill has helped increase high school voter pre-registration and engaged students nationwide with The Civic Center’s “Democracy in a Box” toolkit. Her articles and participation in panel presentations on voting rights and judicial independence issues also helped her earn the Judith Soley Award.
