Accessibility Guidance
What should we consider when designing our voter registration drives so we don’t create barriers for eligible students that want to register?
Making sure that your voter registration drive meets the diverse needs of your community should be a priority. Luckily, there are experts in your schools that can help you. Reach out to your Special Education department to decide on which accommodations your event needs. Here are some best practices to consider:
Approach accessibility holistically.
Don’t just focus on the day of the drive, but also on the advertising and methods of engagement leading up to the drive.
-
Make sure you know where your school’s sensory calm down area is
When making advertisements or instructions for the day of the drive, use clear simplified language and images with captions when possible
If you know that something at your registration drives will not be accessible, let people know ahead of time
-
Make sure the location of your drive will not be a barrier for individuals with mobility needs.
Can individuals that use wheelchairs or other assistive devices reasonably get to the location of your drive?
Is there enough space for individuals in wheelchairs or individuals with sensory needs?
Are the tables at a height that individuals in wheelchairs can use them?
Have one or more laptops along with headphones available as they can provide multiple assistive services
Include forms in multiple languages including tactile braille even knowing that not all w/low vision use it
If you are able to provide an accommodation but are unsure if it’s needed, just do it!
It’s better to have the option and it communicates that you value the needs of your school community.
