The Civics Center Responds to Louisiana v. Callais
In response to the Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais, please find the following quote from Laura W. Brill, CEO of The Civics Center.
Justice Kagan's dissent says it well: the majority opinion in Louisiana v. Callais “eviscerate[s] the law.” That means the decision cuts the life out of a statute that has been a cornerstone of protecting democracy and minority voting rights for 60 years.
Without the Supreme Court as a reliable enforcer of federal protections for voting rights, it is up to the people — all of us — to understand and use the structures of power that exist in the absence of federal protection to ensure that elections are free and fair and that everyone has an equal opportunity to register and vote. More and more, that structure means people. It means individuals and organizations standing firm on values of equality in a democratic society. It means organizing. And even in the face of today's blow to voting rights, it includes voting.
The Civics Center is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with the mission of helping to make voter registration part of the fabric of the high school experience across the United States.
